Riverbed Takes Steelhead Virtual
Riverbed is making its wide area network (WAN) optimization software available via a virtual appliance.
Riverbed Technology, the IT performance company has released Virtual Steelhead, which allows IT organizations to deploy Riverbed's WAN optimization software on top a VMware virtual server.
It is not intended to eliminate the need for physical appliances, which in most cases provide the same level of performance as the virtual appliance.
Nik Rouda, Riverbed Director of Product Marketing says, "A virtual implementation of Steelhead will simplify deployment challenges for IT organizations that don't want to manage another dedicated appliance."
In addition, Rouda noted that a virtual appliance also allows IT organizations with a dedicated team for managing virtualization to deploy WAN optimization services without having to ask the rest of the IT organization to deploy and manage another appliance.

| Xsigo Virtual I/O Deployed By Supplies Network
Virtual input-output (IO) from Xsigo has been used by Supplies Network, a provider of IT consumables and managed print services, to deliver the flexibility of cloud infrastructure while maintaining the security of an isolated network.
Daniel Shipley, data centre architect for Supplies Network, explains that isolation was needed for compliance purposes and to keep credit card information secure for the company's wholesale customers.
But with virtual IO, these segregated network components can be connected together when required in order to provide the aggregate performance needed to deal with high application demand.
The finished infrastructure includes 10 GbE networked storage devices and 16 virtualised servers managed by Xsigo's virtual IO to provide greater scalability and an estimated quadrupling of performance compared with alternative protocols.
Xsigo's IO Director hardware and software-based solution also removes physical complexity from the network as servers can be attached over a single cable and managed virtually, rather than requiring separate cables to run to each device.

Isilon Scale-out Storage Helps Satellite Broadcaster Plan For Growth
European satellite broadcaster STN has deployed scale-out storage from Isilon Systems to accelerate its time to delivery, simplify content management and prepare for potential growth in the future.
Isilon Systems explains that the need for a scalable storage solution for STN stemmed from changing requirements of the applications used and the desire for a powerful but simple foundation for future expansion.
Tomaz Lovsin, managing director of STN, says: "For us, the raw performance and stability of the storage system is critical, as downtime or data loss are catastrophic for our operations."
Service interruption for a matter of minutes can have an adverse effect on STN's operations, as it broadcasts live events and 24-hour channels across central and eastern Europe.
The X-Series deployed by STN features throughput of more than 45 GB per second and storage capacity scalable from a few terabytes too many petabytes of space with utilisation rates around 80 per cent.
