NetApp Integrates with VMware® vCloud™ Director to improve IT Flexibility and Efficiency

NetApp's integration with VMware vCloud Director will enable administrators to automate the creation and deployment of virtual resources for application users..

NetApp has announced support for VMware vCloud Director software to extend NetApp's current leadership in delivering shared storage infrastructure for virtualized environments. VMware vCloud Director enables the delivery of cloud-based IT services for both private and public clouds ranging from on-demand, pay-as-you go infrastructure to enterprise-class, production-ready service offerings.

Now VMware vCloud Director customers can immediately benefit from storage efficiency, data protection, and rapid provisioning features already available for VMware virtualized infrastructures.

"VMware is pleased to work with NetApp to enable the evolution of existing virtual environments to a cloud services model that helps organizations meet business needs with greater agility and lower costs," said Gary Green, vice president, Global Strategic Alliances, VMware. In addition, the NetApp Partner Program recently integrated service providers into the broader NetApp solution partner ecosystem. The first of its kind in the storage industry, this global program supports service providers as they deploy enterprise-class cloud services on NetApp's efficient storage and data management solutions. It also offers service providers access to marketing and sales support, allowing them to differentiate their services, and help speed time to market.

Isilon Delivers First and Only Unified Scale-Out Storage Platform for the Enterprise

Integration of iSCI Protocol into isilon's Scale-out Storage platform consolidates file and block applications onto single storage resource and point of management.

From VMWorld 2010, Isilon announced that it has integrated the iSCI protocol into its OneFS® operating system, delivering the industry's first and only unified scale-out storage platform for the enterprise.

LifeSize Allows Iraq Soldiers to Attend birth of Children

LifeSize appeared in the NBC News after the technology allowed soldiers to be present - virtually - at family events such as birth of their children.

Video conferencing from LifeSize is being used by the Freedom Calls Foundation to allow US soldiers serving in Iraq to attend - virtually - family events such as the birth of their children.

The technology allows soldiers to be present in the room as their partner gives birth, or to attend other events including birthdays, graduation ceremonies and weddings that they would otherwise miss and appeared in an NBC News Making the Difference feature noting the impact that the foundation - and LifeSize's technology - has on separated families.

LifeSize technology is among the six videoconferencing stations, ten video email machines, 50 soft-phones, and 20 hard-phones to which troops in the Sunni Triangle have access.

The vendor partnered with Freedom Calls 2009 and was featured on NBC Nightly News after one expectant father was able to witness the birth of his child from 6,300 miles away.

NBC journalist RON Mott noted that more than 2,000 calls per month were being established between troops and their families at the time of his report, for life changing events and simple face-to-face conversations.

Xsigo Launches Ethernet IO Director

The Input-Output (IO) Director from Xsigo is now available in an Ethernet format, the company has announced.

Setup of the unit is a matter of installing drivers on the relevant server and connecting its Ethernet port directly to the Xsigo device, with management and consolidation of IO resources possible immediately once this is done.

Lloyd Carney, Chief Executive Officer of Xsigo, says: "This announcement marks a quantum leap forward in data centre efficiency. Now the vast population of x86 servers deployed worldwide can be aggregated into private clouds."

"This allows them to provide interchangeable and highly efficient resources using their own native connectivity", he adds..

Benefits of the system include the elimination of expenditure of converged network adapters and the ability to use 1 Gbps or 10Gbps Ethernet connections already available on installed servers.

The IO Director works by virtualising physical devices such as host bus adapters, with a single cable required to connect servers, rather than a number of cables and IO cards per physical unit.
